This interactive workshop will help you get back to the fundamental building blocks that make a book work. We'll learn how to focus on what's needed to get to the next stage and rekindle excitement and creativity along the way.
Who is this workshop for?
- You are a scholar in the humanities, social sciences, and/or interdisciplinary fields.
- You are especially working in: queer/trans/gender studies, ethnic studies, American studies, Native Studies, Black studies, geography, media studies.
- You are a non-fiction author writing about social/political issues.
- You have a draft of a manuscript (in any state!) that you want to move to the next stage.
- You are ready to try something new and reignite inspiration and momentum.
But I'm too busy during the semester! (or during my life)
Same! I get it. But I've learned through many years of writing my own books and supporting authors in writing theirs, the only way to write and revise a book is to make and hold the time for it. Committing to this workshop and the (low-key) activities between sessions will help you build your commitment to your project (i.e. to yourself). And rather than trying to get started after your teaching or other obligations end, when winter break arrives, you'll hit the ground running.
What will we cover?
- Week 1: Rebooting and Reverse Engineering a Book
- Week 2: Building Blocks I (research object, argument, through-line)
- Week 3: Building Blocks II (theory, methods, existing research)
- Week 4: Getting to Work (revision plans, strategies for blocks, best practices)
